Why carat isn't size

Carat measures weight. How big a diamond looks depends on how that weight is spread — and depth is free to vary.

All three of these rounds weigh exactly 0.75 ct. Cut shallow, it's 5.99 mm across; cut deep, only 5.72 mm, with the difference hidden underneath where nobody sees it. So shop by millimeters, and check them on your own hand.

How it looks on different hands

The same 5.85 mm stone covers 36% of a slim size 4.5 finger, 33% of an average size 6 and 30% of a size 8. That's why a photo of a ring on someone else's hand can mislead you: the diamond looks bigger on a smaller hand.

Living with 0.75 carat

Just under the milestone

Three-quarters of a carat gives a good share of the look of a one-carat stone, and on a slim finger the difference can be hard to see. It's a sensible size if the budget is better spent on cut quality or the setting. As a round, it shows the most sparkle for its weight, though not the most size: elongated shapes of the same weight cover more of the finger.

It's about a third the width of a US dime (17.91 mm).

Good to know

Worked out for a 0.75 ct round, not copied from a chart.

On the hand: classic

On an average size 6 finger (17.7 mm wide) it covers about 33% of the width — a classic, balanced look. On a slim size 4.5 finger that rises to 36%; on a size 8, it falls to 30%.

What the extra 0.25 ct buys

Going up from 0.5 ct adds 50% more weight but only 31% more face-up area: 0.74 mm to the width. Weight grows faster than the size you see.

Ask for the head size

Ready-made cathedral head starts above this size, so ask for it made at 5.8 mm. The other styles come ready-made for a stone this size.

Want it to look bigger?

A halo of small diamonds around it takes the face-up width from 5.85 mm to about 8.1 mm — 38% wider — for much less than a bigger center stone would cost.

The same size in other shapes

To cover the same area from above you'd need about 0.67 ct in an oval, 0.89 ct in a cushion and 0.84 ct in a princess.

Will it fit your setting?

Most settings sold online are made to fit the diamond you choose, so every common style takes a 0.75 ct round: ask for a 5.8 mm head. Here's which are also sold ready-made in that size. How the fit check works.

  • Comes pre-madeSolitaire, halo, three stone and bezel — ask for a 5.8 mm head.
  • Made to orderEast–west — the ready-made heads we could find are for oval stones, so ask for one made at 5.8 mm.
  • Made to orderCathedral — the smallest ready-made head is 5.9 mm, so ask for one made at 5.8 mm to hold it snugly.

Ready-made sizes are read from named listings — see setting styles. Already have the ring? Enter its head size in the tool.
