Why carat isn't size
Carat measures weight. How big a diamond looks depends on how that weight is spread — and depth is free to vary.
All three of these rounds weigh exactly 0.5 ct. Cut shallow, it's 5.23 mm across; cut deep, only 4.99 mm, with the difference hidden underneath where nobody sees it. So shop by millimeters, and check them on your own hand.
How it looks on different hands
The same 5.11 mm stone covers 31% of a slim size 4.5 finger, 29% of an average size 6 and 26% of a size 8. That's why a photo of a ring on someone else's hand can mislead you: the diamond looks bigger on a smaller hand.
Living with 0.5 carat
Petite and practical
Half a carat is a classic petite size: noticeable without being showy, comfortable for everyday wear, and easy to set low so it doesn't snag on gloves or knitwear. As a round, it shows the most sparkle for its weight, though not the most size: elongated shapes of the same weight cover more of the finger.

On an average size 6 finger (17.7 mm wide) it covers about 29% of the width — a classic, balanced look. On a slim size 4.5 finger that rises to 31%; on a size 8, it falls to 26%.
What the extra 0.25 ct buys
Going up from 0.25 ct adds 100% more weight but only 59% more face-up area: 1.05 mm to the width. Weight grows faster than the size you see.
Consider 0.45 ct
Prices tend to step up at round weights like 0.5 ct. A 0.45 ct round measures about 4.93 × 4.93 mm — only 0.18 mm narrower, with 7% less area on top. That's very hard to see on a hand.
