Why carat isn't size
Carat measures weight. How big a diamond looks depends on how that weight is spread — and depth is free to vary.
All three of these rounds weigh exactly 3 ct. Cut shallow, it's 9.51 mm across; cut deep, only 9.07 mm, with the difference hidden underneath where nobody sees it. So shop by millimeters, and check them on your own hand.
How it looks on different hands
The same 9.28 mm stone covers 57% of a slim size 4.5 finger, 53% of an average size 6 and 48% of a size 8. That's why a photo of a ring on someone else's hand can mislead you: the diamond looks bigger on a smaller hand.
Living with 3 carat
Dramatic
Three carats is a show-stopping size. It dominates all but the broadest fingers, so seeing it on your own hand before buying matters more here than at any other size. Look for a head made for a stone this size, and insure it. As a round, it shows the most sparkle for its weight, though not the most size: elongated shapes of the same weight cover more of the finger.

On an average size 6 finger (17.7 mm wide) it covers about 53% of the width — a dramatic look that dominates the finger. On a slim size 4.5 finger that rises to 57%; on a size 8, it falls to 48%.
What the extra 0.5 ct buys
Going up from 2.5 ct adds 20% more weight but only 13% more face-up area: 0.55 mm to the width. Weight grows faster than the size you see.
Consider 2.9 ct
Prices tend to step up at round weights like 3 ct. A 2.9 ct round measures about 9.18 × 9.18 mm — only 0.10 mm narrower, with 2% less area on top. That's very hard to see on a hand.
Six prongs at this size
Many jewelers suggest six prongs rather than four for a stone this size, so that losing one claw doesn't free the diamond.
